Micropiles-(Mini-Piles) are small diameter piles consisting of a central steel reinforcement member encased and surrounded by grout that is in contact with soil or rock. The central member consisting of either a solid bar or hollow bar and grout is placed by tremie method or injected under pressure. Depending on the capacity of the micropile and soil conditions, steel casing may be required and is installed prior to placing the grout. The casing may be pulled out during the grouting operation. The capacity of the pile is determined by the friction developed between the grout and soil/rock interface. The reinforcement member needs to be designed, with adequate structural capacity to withstand compressive load test requirements. Micropiles are typically used in limited access areas such as low overhead clearance.
